If you're looking for something different to do, head to the Waugh Drive Bridge and watch as the Mexican free-tailed bats emerge at sunset. An estimated 250,000 and 300,000 bats call the bridge home, and their amazing flight "winds along the bayou or through downtown Houston's skyscrapers. Here is some of what this unique event offers near our Houston Heights apartments:
Mexican free-tailed Bats
Known for their flying speed, Mexican free-tailed bats are reddish to dark brown or gray in color. They prefer roosting in caves but will also live under bridges, in attics, and abandoned buildings. Their long, narrow wings help them reach speeds of 99 mph, and they can fly 60 miles round-trip in one evening.
Buffalo Bayou Partnership Bat Boat Tours
Throughout the year, the Buffalo Bayou Partnership offers fun pontoon boat rides. One of the exciting choices includes a 90-minute adventure to witness the bats emerge from the bridge. A wildlife expert is onboard, and you'll enjoy an evening on the water unlike ever before.
Bat Chats
Learn more about these creatures during the weekly bat chats. Every Friday from March through October, the Houston Area Bat Team provides fascinating facts about Mexican free-tailed bats and bats in general. Arrive 30 minutes before sunset to catch this fun question-and-answer session.
Best Viewing
While the bats emerge throughout the year, you won't see them on rainy days or when the sunset temperatures are near 50 degrees or lower. Two of the best viewing locations include the northeast bank of the bayou and the viewing platform at the southeast corner of the bayou bank.
Before watching the bats, enjoy a delicious meal at one of Houston's Mexican restaurants. To become a resident of Lincoln Heights, please contact us. Our leasing team will schedule a personalized tour where you can discover everything our luxury apartments in Houston have to offer.
