Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge
About an hour and 20 minutes from Houston, you'll find the Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge, where you can enjoy birdwatching and hiking year-round. Spot a variety of waterfowl, including whistling ducks and seaside sparrows, alligators, and sometimes bobcats. During the winter, see the gathering of Canadian snow geese. Contact the refuge ahead of your trip to arrange a tour with one of the rangers.
Galveston Island
Just an hour southeast of Houston, visiting the sandy beaches of Galveston makes for a great day trip. We recommend the San Luis Pass Pocket Park Beaches. While you're there, squeeze in some time to check out the Victorian-style architecture throughout the Strand Historic District. Hop on the downtown trolley that runs throughout the district. Make sure to try the delicious seafood.
Port Arthur
Port Arthur is an hour and a half drive from Houston. Like Galveston, Port Arthur sits along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. Birdwatchers, hikers, cyclers, and fishermen will enjoy a trip to Port Arthur. Check out the many native birds and alligators. Hike through Faith Trail, where you'll see a number of monuments. Port Arthur is also home to the Museum of the Gulf Coast.
