Nestled near our Houston luxury apartments is an outdoor destination you don't want to miss. We're talking about The John Fairey Garden, which is renowned for its design, conservation programs, and an amazing collection featuring over 3,000 plants. Here is some of what you can discover during your visit:
The Mexico Collection
John Fairey became interested in the "extreme diversity and untested nature of Mexican flora." In the 1980s, he started traveling to Mexico in search of interesting plants that would thrive in the Houston area. Over the years, John and other teams made more than 100 trips and chose each plant for its uniqueness. One of the highlights of the Mexico collection includes the agave plants. They're known as century plants since some species take one hundred years to bloom in the wild. The foliage is often thick and succulent. These plants are also the source of tequila and agave nectar.
The Oak Collection
In 1983, a tornado destroyed many of the aging trees on the garden's property. That's when John decided to select oaks from around the world. Today, the garden is home to about 70 species. Most come from Texas and Mexico, though you will see those from Asia, Europe, and beyond.
Nursery
Part of the mission at The John Fairey Garden is to make distinctive and uncommon plants available for sale. Staff cultivate them from the garden. They make great gifts for that special gardener in your life. The nursery is open Tuesday through Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
