For a fun day out, head to the Nature Discovery Center. Nestled in nearby Bellaire, it's where the team believes that "nature is an essential part of life." Here is some of what the center offers near our Houston Heights apartments:
Adult Programs
The Nature Discovery Center features an array of adult programs throughout the year. A highlight includes the Willow Waterhole Bird Surveys. Led by retired NDC Senior Naturalist Mary Ann Beauchemin, this event helps contribute to the understanding of resident and migrant birds. The surveys take place on the third Saturday of every month except in December. Other adult programs include Bats, Beers, and Bingo, Tree Identification Walks, and Birding in the Park.
Tenrec
Tenrecs call the island of Madagascar home. While they look and act like hedgehogs, they aren't closely related to them. Tenrecs are nocturnal and spend their evenings searching for worms and insects. These animals are skilled climbers and create dens in tree cavities and under logs. At the center, you will meet Henry. He arrived in 2018, and is found in the Discovery Room.
Corn Snake
You will also see Rusty, a five-year-old corn snake. These snakes are abundant in the southeastern United States. They are most active at night and typically feast on birds, bird eggs, and small rodents.
Become a Volunteer
If you enjoy spending time outdoors, become a volunteer. The dedicated team serves the center in many capacities, from leading bird walks to tending to the flowers. The coordinator will work with you to match your skills and schedule.
After exploring the Nature Discovery Center, enjoy a turkey burger and fries at a nearby restaurant. If you're looking to call Lincoln Heights home, please contact our leasing team. They will gladly schedule a tour where you can see the amenities and floor plans our luxury apartments in Houston have to offer.
