Featuring both beach and bay sides, Galveston Island State Park offers recreational activities for everyone.
Here is some of what you can enjoy near our Houston Heights apartments:
Hiking
Lace up your hiking boots along the park's miles of trails. For a short adventure, explore the half-mile Eskimo Curlew Loop. It showcases the park's wetlands restoration work and shows how the slightest change in elevation can dramatically affect the plants. For a longer journey, take a walk along the Prairie Trail. Stretching 3.3 miles, it highlights what Galveston Island once looked like.
Geocaching
Search for treasures during some geocaching fun. To get started, you will need a smartphone app that will guide you toward the caches. The caches are rated on size, difficulty, and terrain. It might take time to find a cache once you're in the general location, and remember to bring small, inexpensive items to trade for cache swag.
Study Nature
Protecting part of the upper Gulf Coast barrier island ecosystem, Galveston Island State Park is home to dozens of animals, from armadillos to marsh rabbits. You may also see nature's feathery creatures. More than 300 bird species have been recorded at the park. Grab your binoculars and watch for Carolina chickadees, common terns, barn owls, and more.
Lodging
Finally, spend a night at the park inside the Stewart House. It has everything you need for a comfortable stay. Amenities include a microwave, two fireplaces, and a queen bed. Other lodging opportunities are also available.
On your way home from Galveston Island State Park, sample po'boy sandwiches at a local restaurant. They are best enjoyed with a side of fries and an ice-cold drink.
